The Swiss Federal Council, led by Minister Guy Parmelin, has rejected the proposal to join an international taskforce to trace Russian oligarch funds. Parmelin argued that Switzerland, as a neutral country, has an interest in maintaining a certain degree of restraint in an increasingly polarised world. He warned that joining the taskforce could lead to increased pressure on Switzerland to adopt sanctions from the EU and the US, and that the country should retain its freedom to make decisions in this matter. The Swiss National Council will vote on a motion to join the taskforce next week. Diplomats from France, Italy, Germany, the US, Canada, Japan and the UK have urged Switzerland to take a more active role in the search for Russian funds.nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn
