The Swiss Senate has voted to ban tobacco advertising in newspapers and magazines. The vote was 22 to 17 with 3 abstentions. The ban would apply to all publications, except those primarily intended for foreign markets or those exclusively for people in the tobacco industry. The Senate rejected a proposal from the commission to allow advertising in publications sold mainly to adults by subscription. The proposal now goes to the National Council. The ban is in line with the Tobacco Advertising Initiative, which was accepted by the people and the cantons of Switzerland. The initiative seeks to reduce the consumption of tobacco products by limiting their promotion. The ban on advertising in newspapers and magazines is an important step in this direction. It is hoped that it will help to reduce the appeal of tobacco products and discourage people from taking up smoking.
