President Alain Berset called on both Kosovo and Serbia to implement the agreements of Brussels and Ohrid, negotiated in the spring, to normalise the relationship between the two countries during a meeting with Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti in Bern on Friday. The Swiss government expressed its support for this normalisation process, emphasising the need for credible steps and pragmatism from both sides. The agreements include a commitment from the Kosovo government to guarantee adequate self-government to communities with a Serbian majority in Northern Kosovo. The Swiss government also supports Kosovo's bid to join the Council of Europe, which would give all citizens, including those of the Serbian minority, access to the European Court of Human Rights. The bilateral relationship between Switzerland and Kosovo has developed economically, but the potential has not yet been fully realised. Around 115,000 Kosovars live in Switzerland, and up to 180,000 people have Kosovar roots. The Swiss Army has been involved in peacekeeping in Kosovo since 1999, and the Swisscoy mission was recently extended until 2026.
