The Swiss Federal Office for Customs and Border Protection (BAZG) has announced plans to strengthen border security in the canton of Ticino. Additional personnel from the German-speaking part of Switzerland have been transferred to the southern border in order to cope with the influx of refugees. This measure is primarily intended to relieve the existing personnel in Ticino. The number of illegal stays has been increasing again, with 5763 people being apprehended in August 2023, compared to 5837 in August 2022. Most of the migrants are from Afghanistan and are travelling through the Balkan route. The SVP Switzerland has called for the closure of the borders, similar to France, and the mobilization of the army. The BAZG has stated that the use of drones would not be beneficial as people are mostly arriving by train.
