The Swiss government has been tasked by the National Council to investigate whether the situation of non-binary people can be improved without legally challenging the binary model (male and female gender). Possible measures could include specific measures to eliminate discrimination and protect the personality of non-binary people, an easier process for changing names, and adjustments to the legal framework for identification documents. The government has agreed to the task, although a report from December concluded that a third gender should not be introduced. Since January 1, 2022, it has been possible to change the gender registered in the civil registry from male to female or vice versa, but this does not help those who do not identify with either category.
