The Zurich government is already planning for a possible election of Councilor of States Daniel Jositsch (SP) to the Federal Council. In this case, the necessary replacement election of a Council of States seat would take place on March 3, 2024. On October 22nd, Daniel Jositsch will stand for re-election to the Council of States and will also run for a successor to Federal Councillor Alain Berset (SP). This election will take place on December 13th. Should Jositsch be re-elected to the Council of States and also elected to the Federal Council, a by-election would be held for the vacant Council of States seat. In order to avoid a prolonged vacancy of the second Zurich Council of States seat, the government has now set March 3, 2024 as a precautionary election date, as announced on Tuesday.
