A new alliance has launched a referendum to allow the public to decide on the law regarding a secure power supply with renewable energy. The alliance, called the Alliance for Nature and Landscape Switzerland, claims that the current law, known as the Mantelerlass, does not adequately protect nature and landscape. Most environmental organisations agree that nature and landscape must be sacrificed for power production, the alliance said in a press conference in Bern on Tuesday. The Mantelerlass gives priority to power production from renewable energy sources over nature and landscape protection. Therefore, the public should be allowed to decide on the Mantelerlass. The alliance has until 18 January to collect the 50,000 signatures needed for the referendum to take place. It also plans to support other projects, such as an initiative that calls for the potential of buildings and infrastructure to be maximised for solar energy production before modules are built into the landscape.nn
