The Global Pension Index 2021, released by consulting firm Mercer and the CFA Institute (MCPGI), has ranked the Swiss pension system in the top quarter of all 47 analysed systems. The Netherlands has the best pension system, followed by Iceland and Denmark, with Switzerland coming in at 11th place. The index evaluates the pension systems based on three sub-indices: adequacy (“How much do you get?”), sustainability (“Can the system continue to function in the future?”) and integrity (“Can the system be trusted?”). The Swiss pension system was rated above average in all three categories. South Korea had the lowest scores in the three sub-indices for adequacy, Austria for sustainability and the Philippines for integrity. Mercer noted that while global markets are constantly evolving, the approaches of Swiss pension funds are “rather traditional”, with a strong focus on Swiss bonds, real estate and stocks.
