Geologists and specialists have reconstructed the debris flow at the Bündner mountain village of Brienz. They found that a huge rockfall was stopped by softer material shortly before the village. On the night of June 15th to 16th, soft rock in the form of a debris flow slid down, according to geologist Reto Thöny in a statement from the Albula municipality. Later, hard dolomite masses fell with great force towards Brienz, but got stuck in the softer debris flow. To gain these insights, the experts examined data from various monitoring and surveillance systems and set up TV cameras. As the 1.2 million cubic meters of rock fell in the dark, nobody knew the details until now. The spared inhabitants of Brienz GR were informed at an information event in the nearby Tiefencastel on Thursday evening.
