The Swiss Federal Council has been forced to search for a new head of security policy after the designated Secretary of State, Jean-Daniel Ruch, decided not to take up the position. This is a major setback for the Department of Defence, headed by Federal Councillor Viola Amherd.
Ruch was appointed to the role in December 2020, but has since decided to decline the offer. This means that the Federal Council must now begin the process of finding a suitable replacement.
The position of head of security policy is a crucial one, as it involves overseeing the country’s defence and security policies. It is also responsible for coordinating the activities of the Swiss Armed Forces and the Federal Intelligence Service.
The Federal Council has yet to announce a timeline for the selection process, but it is likely to take several months. In the meantime, the Department of Defence will continue to be headed by Amherd.
The search for a new head of security policy is a major challenge for the Federal Council, as it must ensure that the right person is chosen for the role. The successful candidate must have the necessary experience and qualifications to lead the country’s security policy.
