The Bernina Pass road between Pisciadell GR and San Carlo GR is closed until Sunday due to a rockfall. On Thursday evening, around 1000 cubic meters of rock detached from the mountainside above the road, with five cubic meters of it blocking the road.
The Bernina Road is currently being expanded, as the Graubünden Canton's Department of Civil Engineering wrote on Friday afternoon. The area of the rockfall is located 100 meters above the construction site, where a large part of the fallen stones were held back by the temporary protective devices installed at the construction site.
After an assessment by a geologist, the emergency services were able to begin the evacuation of the road. Additionally, there are several sites on the slope that need to be "defused", it was further stated. This includes felling exposed trees, rock clearance work and the installation of protective devices.
Stones blocked the path of the ambulance.
Shortly after a traffic accident on the mountain pass near La Rösa, a 33-year-old driver was injured. The emergency responders had to take a difficult mountain road to get the injured person to the hospital in Poschiavo due to the blocked road.
A police spokesperson told the Keystone-SDA news agency that the injury was not severe enough to make the long journey dangerous for the injured person. The alternative of taking them to Samedan Hospital would have taken even longer.
