The Novo Quartet from Copenhagen won the first prize at the 77th Geneva Music Competition on Sunday. The string quartet, founded in 2018, was praised by the jury as "one of the most promising young ensembles in Denmark".

The Elmire Quartet based in Paris and the Hana Quartet founded in Munich jointly won the second prize. "This year, no third prize was awarded as the level of performance was so high," explained Corina Belcas, the chair of the jury, in the press release.

The Geneva Competition was established in 1939 and is one of the most important international music competitions. Its goal is to discover young talents, promote and support them. The first prize is endowed with 20,000 Swiss francs. In addition, the winners receive two years of personal coaching to help launch their careers.

The Geneva International Music Competition has produced nearly 800 artists, including the pianist Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli, the pianist and conductor Georg Solti, the flutist Emmanuel Pahud, and the pianist Louis Schwizgebel.

The Concours de Genève stands out for its multidisciplinary approach: every year, the main disciplines of piano, flute, oboe, clarinet, cello, viola, string quartet, singing and percussion are offered in alternating years.
