40 percent of the population with a migration background

In 2022, two-fifths of the population over the age of 15 in Switzerland had a migration background for the first time. Almost 80 percent of them were born abroad and therefore belong to the first generation.

In 2021, the proportion of the population over the age of 15 with a migration background was 39 percent. In 2022, a total of 2,951,000 people of foreign origin were living in Switzerland, as reported by the Federal Statistical Office on Monday.

2,342,000 of them were born abroad. The remaining 20 percent or 609,000 people were born in Switzerland and therefore belong to the second generation of immigrants.

38% of the population with a migration background had Swiss citizenship in 2022. The second most common nationality among this population was Italian, at 10 percent, followed by German, at 9 percent.

They were followed by Portugal, France, Kosovo, Spain, Turkey, Serbia and North Macedonia. 649,000 people with a migration background had other nationalities.
