The Bernina road between the Engadin and the Puschlav can be used again on an hourly basis from Tuesday following rockfalls. Two time slots are planned, one in the morning and one in the afternoon.

For safety reasons, a temporary opening can only take place during daylight hours, the Graubünden Civil Engineering Office announced on Monday. The main connection to the southern valley of Puschlav will be open between 7am and 9am and between 4pm and 6pm. During this time, the pass road can be passed in one lane. Several checkpoints will ensure safety.

The safety and clearance work made good progress at the weekend, the office wrote. After the block collapse on October 26, it became apparent that the site was very unstable. New erosion points in the demolition area had to be secured again and again.

The time slots for driving on the road are valid until further notice, but may change depending on the weather. The Civil Engineering Office strongly recommends checking the current road conditions on the cantonal website before setting off. Alternative connections to the southern valley of Puschlav are via Bergell and Livigno in Italy. They involve a great deal of additional time.
