The Swiss Armed Forces want to secure expertise in explosives. In order to obtain more training opportunities, the Federal Armaments Office (Armasuisse) is participating in a project of the European Defense Agency.
Defense Minister Viola Amherd approved an agreement to this effect, according to a statement from Armasuise on Tuesday. The “Education and Training Program on Energetic Materials” project serves to ensure competence in the field of explosives at European level.
The project lays the foundations for a European network of experts, Armasuisse wrote. Specifically, a European platform for training and further education is to be created. This will serve as a central point of contact for relevant modules and courses as well as course providers on the topic of energetic materials, such as the development, production and use of explosives.
In addition to Switzerland, the Netherlands, Portugal, Sweden and the Czech Republic are also involved in the project. The agreement comes into force once all participating countries have signed it and is valid until one year after the end of the project.
Switzerland can participate in the European Defense Agency’s projects on the basis of a cooperation agreement signed in March 2012. It is currently involved in eight of the Agency’s Capability Technology Groups (CapTechs) and has joined several research projects.
