More than 500 illegally caged native and exotic birds were confiscated in the Neuchâtel Jura on Monday. Four people were questioned. The public prosecutor's office opened a criminal investigation against the suspects.

They are suspected of violating the Animal Protection Act and the Hunting Act, as the Neuchâtel cantonal police announced on Thursday. The authorities seized trapping cages, nets and whistles for imitating birdsong worth between 40,000 and 100,000 francs in Val-de-Ruz.

The approximately 200 native songbirds, mainly greenfinches, linnets and bullfinches, were destined for resale in Switzerland and abroad. The birds were caught in traps that had been set up in forests. The native birds were released back into the wild.

In addition to the Neuchâtel police, two inspectors from the Office of Consumer Protection and Veterinary Services, four gamekeepers and representatives of the French-speaking section of the Swiss Birdlife association were also involved in the operation.
