From Saturday, the speed limit on the A1 highway between Oftringen and Suhr in the canton of Aargau will be 100 km/h in both directions. According to the Federal Roads Office (Astra), the reason for the temporary speed reduction is the poor condition of the road surface.

The decision to reduce the speed limit was made for safety reasons and in consultation with the Aargau cantonal police, Astra announced on Friday. Astra media spokesman Samuel Hool told the Keystone-SDA news agency in response to an inquiry because the road surface is worn and its grip is diminishing.

The reduction will apply until the weather and temperatures allow the surface to be repaired. According to Astra, the renovation work should start next spring.

The approximately 15-kilometre-long section of the A1 between the Wiggertal junction and the Aarau Ost junction has been in operation since 1967. According to Astra, the last complete renewal was carried out in 1998 and 1999. In some places, the road surface was last renewed in 2010.

Always four lanes during the day

During the construction work for the resurfacing, which will take around a year and should start in spring 2024, four lanes will always be available during the day. The work will be carried out in sections with a length of around five kilometers with a so-called "4/0" traffic routing. This means that all four lanes will be on one side of the road, while the other side will be free for the construction work.

According to Astra, lane narrowing and local, temporary speed reductions are to be expected. However, complete closures of the road section, which is used by over 100,000 vehicles a day, are not planned.
