The electorate of Basel-Landschaft clearly approved the introduction of a landfill tax on Sunday. With 71.44 percent, they approved a corresponding amendment to the constitution, and with 71.43 percent an amendment to the Environmental Protection Act. In future, the canton will be able to levy up to CHF 50 per tonne of landfilled construction waste if necessary.

The constitutional amendment was approved by 33,802 votes to 13,513. The result for the amendment to the Environmental Protection Act was almost identical. This received 33,789 votes against 13,516. The turnout was 25.23 percent, as reported by the State Chancellery.

The landfill tax is intended to promote the recycling of reusable materials. At present, the canton has no funds available to levy such an incentive tax. The bill creates the legal basis for this.

The revenue will be allocated to the state budget. This is intended to compensate for provisions amounting to 150 million to date to finance the remediation of contaminated sites.

In May 2023, the majority of the Basel-Landschaft cantonal council voted in favor of the landfill tax. As a constitutional amendment in the canton of Basel-Landschaft must be submitted to the electorate, the bill was put to the ballot box. The SVP voted against, while all other parties were in favor of the landfill tax.
