According to the World Health Organization (WHO), two more hospitals in the Gaza Strip have requested evacuation after the Shifa Hospital. These are the Indonesian hospital and the Al-Ahli hospital, one of the oldest facilities in the Gaza Strip with more than 140 years of history.
This was stated by a WHO spokesperson in Geneva on Tuesday. Following the rescue of 31 premature babies from the severely damaged Shifa hospital at the weekend, the WHO is continuing to work at full speed to save the remaining patients there.
Specialized ambulances are needed for more than 50 patients with spinal cord injuries and around 20 dialysis patients, said the WHO spokesperson. Security guarantees from the warring parties Hamas and Israel are also needed to ensure that the ambulance convoys do not come under fire.
Wherever possible, the WHO is trying to support hospitals and keep them open because they are the last refuge for many sick and injured people in their hour of need. In the northern Gaza Strip, however, the situation is so dramatic that this is hardly possible.
