According to the United Nations, at least 10,000 civilians have been killed in Ukraine since Russia's invasion 21 months ago - including more than 560 children. However, as many bodies have not yet been identified, the actual death toll is likely to be "considerably higher", the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in Geneva announced on Tuesday. In addition, more than 18,500 injured civilians have so far been registered with the help of UN observers stationed on the ground.

"10,000 civilians killed is a grim milestone for Ukraine," said the head of the UN mission in Ukraine, Danielle Bell, according to the statement. Russia's war of aggression is developing into a protracted conflict "whose high human cost is difficult to comprehend". Many civilians are being killed by Russian missiles far from the front line, Bell added - and emphasized: "No place in Ukraine is completely safe."
