The overall economic importance of tourism increased significantly again last year. However, there is still a gap to the pre-crisis figures.

Overall, tourism in Switzerland will generate gross value added of CHF 19.6 billion in 2022, according to preliminary figures published by the Federal Statistical Office on Thursday. This corresponds to a 2.6 percent share of total Swiss value added. The approximately 166,600 full-time jobs accounted for 3.9% of all jobs.

Tourism has thus clearly recovered from the crisis. In the coronavirus years 2020 and 2021, value added slipped to CHF 14.0 billion and CHF 15.5 billion respectively, which corresponded to just 2.1% of the overall economy. The share of full-time jobs fell to 3.6% and 3.8% respectively during the crisis.

In 2019, the last year before coronavirus, tourism generated CHF 20.4 billion. Despite strong inflation last year, the shortfall was still around CHF 750 million or just under 4%. The number of full-time jobs fell by around 7,600 (-4.4%).
