The Gotthard road tunnel was closed for around four hours on Friday morning due to a vehicle fire. A car caught fire in the tunnel at around 8.30 am. The driver suffered minor injuries.
The emergency services were able to extinguish the fire quickly, according to the Uri cantonal police. The 47-year-old driver was taken to hospital.
According to the police, the man had been driving north. The amount of property damage was initially unclear, as was the cause of the fire. The police began an investigation.
Traffic jams formed in front of both tunnel portals due to the closure. After midday, the police lifted the closure in both directions, but there were still waiting times at first.
The Uri Cantonal Hospital's rescue service, the Gotthard Damage Prevention Service, the Office for National Roads Operations, a local towing company and the Uri Cantonal Police were deployed to deal with the fire.
