Freight transport in Switzerland grew less strongly than economic output in 2022. According to the Federal Statistical Office (FSO), this was a continuation of a long-term trend.

Overall, freight transport services in 2022 would only have increased slightly by 0.2% compared to the previous year, the Federal Office announced on Monday. Gross domestic product, on the other hand, grew by 2.6% in real terms.

Rail accounted for 38 percent of transport services last year, while road transport accounted for 62 percent.

According to the FSO, freight traffic has been growing significantly less strongly than the economy since 2012. However, the decline in transit traffic - a factor that is not directly related to Swiss economic development - also plays a role here.

According to the Federal Office, import and export traffic as well as domestic traffic have increased by a total of 10% since 2012. However, gross domestic product rose by 21% in the same period.

The FSO attributed this development to changes in the economic structure. Industrial production, which requires a lot of goods transportation, is tending to lose ground to the service sector.
