Schwyz SVP cantonal councillor Bernhard Diethelm, who is accused of assault and distributing animal pornography, will not be standing again in the 2024 cantonal council elections. Sabrina Kessler-Schnyder is to take over the cantonal council seat.

As Diethelm's membership has been suspended since July 2023, he can no longer run for the SVP in the 2024 elections, cantonal party president Bürgi told the Keystone-SDA news agency on Wednesday. He was confirming a report in the online edition of the "Boten der Urschweiz" newspaper on Tuesday evening.

Kessler-Schnyder will be the candidate for Diethelm's seat on the cantonal council, Bürgi confirmed. Kessler works as a landlady at the Sattelegg mountain restaurant in Vorderthal.

In July 2023, the District Court of Zurich found Diethelm guilty of assault and possession and distribution of animal pornography and sentenced him to a suspended prison sentence of eight months.

He was also accused of attempted rape and endangering life. He is alleged to have assaulted a prostitute in Zurich. However, he was acquitted of these charges. In addition to the public prosecutor's office, Diethelm had also filed a precautionary appeal.
