The Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research increased the danger of avalanches in parts of Switzerland on Saturday. In Graubünden and the southernmost part of Valais, there is a high avalanche risk (level 4 out of 5).

Above 2,200 meters, the large amount of fresh snow and the extensive accumulations of drifting snow are "prone to disruption", according to the website. With the sometimes strong north wind, spontaneous avalanches are to be expected, "occasionally very large ones". They could advance in the typical avalanche tracks to higher valley locations and endanger exposed traffic routes.

Even individual winter sports enthusiasts could very easily trigger avalanches. The conditions are very critical for tours and off-piste descents away from secured pistes.

The avalanche danger is considerable in large parts of the Alps, warning level 3 applies.
