The city of Baden has fallen victim to a hacker attack. Large amounts of data, some of it sensitive, were uploaded to the darknet, as confirmed by a spokeswoman for the city of Baden on Monday.
The "NZZ" online portal first reported on the "data theft" on Monday. Since last week, data has been offered for download in a hacker forum - including tables with names and addresses of residents.
Accounting and cremation lists
In addition to partially public data such as the city's budget from 2013 to 2023, the "NZZ" lists sensitive information such as parts of the accounts payable or a list of which deceased persons were cremated and when.
Entries that were created a few months ago indicated that the data was genuine and up-to-date. "The data leak probably stems from an older security vulnerability. We have closed various security gaps and taken security measures in recent months," Nicole Meier Doka, media spokesperson for the city of Baden, is quoted as saying.
According to the NZZ, there are many indications that it was not the central database that was hacked, but only a backup copy. The city has not received a ransom demand.
Investigations are currently underway into how the hackers obtained the data, as Meier said. It remains to be seen whether data from the city of Aarau is also affected. The two largest cities in Aargau merged their IT organizations in 2019.
At the request of the Keystone-SDA news agency, the town of Baden announced on Monday evening that the experts' investigations were in full swing. It promised more detailed information.
