At the 45th Max Ophüls Prize Film Festival from January 22 to 28 in the German state of Saarland, 18 prizes totaling 118,500 euros will be awarded. Switzerland is represented with five films. This was announced by the organizers on Friday in Saarbrücken.
Swiss work is represented in the documentary film category with "The Driven Ones" by Piet Baumgartner. The director followed several students on the Strategy and International Management Master's program at the University of St. Gallen (HSG) over a period of seven years and shows their motivation: success.
"Electric Fields" by Lisa Gertsch is nominated in the feature film category. The program also includes three Swiss short films: "And The Wind Weeps" by Aulona Selmani, "God's Anus" by Jan-David Bolt and "Syncope" by Linus von Stumberg.
A total of 58 films are taking part in the competitions in the four categories of feature film, documentary, medium-length film and short film. Together with the sidebars and special series, 131 films will be shown in 226 screenings at seven venues. "A film year full of emotion, depth and the desire for freedom," said program director Theresa Winkler to the German Press Agency.
The Max Ophüls Prize is considered the most important festival for young German-language film and stands for the discovery of young talent from Austria, Germany and Switzerland. At the most recent edition almost a year ago, the organizers recorded more than 38,000 visits to the cinemas and events.
The 45th Max Ophüls Prize Film Festival will also take place in a dual format. A selection of the films will once again be available to stream via the film festival website.
