The Uri cantonal police stopped a van with 14 people in the hold in Flüelen on Friday. The van, which had already evaded a police check in northern Italy, had previously been pursued by several police cars.

The police suspect that they are Syrian nationals, as they wrote in a statement on Friday afternoon. All of them are in police custody.

In the communiqué, the police provided no information on the state of health of the 14 people they found in the hold, nor on the driver. No further information was available from the media office on Friday.

The Uri cantonal police received the tip-off about the vehicle shortly before 10 a.m. from the Federal Office for Customs and Border Security. The van with French license plates had evaded an inspection in northern Italy, according to the police statement.

Pursuit over 30 kilometers

When it became known that the suspicious vehicle had driven into the Gotthard road tunnel in Airolo TI, the cantonal police of Uri set up a checkpoint at the north portal in Göschenen to stop it. However, the driver ignored the police's request to stop, according to the press release.

According to the Uri cantonal police, the van then continued north at excessive speed and in violation of various traffic regulations. It was followed by several police vehicles.

After driving around 30 kilometers, the Uri cantonal police were able to stop and check the van at a jetty. They discovered 14 people in the loading area of the vehicle.
