Retour au fil d'actualité
From the New Year, 38 out of 316 train connections a week between Brig VS and Domodossola (I) will be canceled due to a lack of authorization. According to SBB, this is due to a new fire safety regulation issued by the Italian Ministry of Transport for travel through longer tunnels.
Intercity and Interregio trains will be canceled in both directions from January 1, 2024 until further notice, as announced by SBB on Friday. Eurocity connections and BLS regional express trains are not affected. These have a corresponding license in Italy.
There is no replacement for the 38 weekly canceled connections. Passengers are advised to switch to the 278 unaffected connections, SBB announced at the request of Keystone-SDA.
New fire protection regulations
The new fire protection regulations for the passage through longer tunnels will come into force at the beginning of 2024, the statement continued. Due to border traffic agreements between Switzerland and Italy, the SBB trains Domino and EW IV used on the Simplon route were previously exempt from this directive.
However, due to the pending adaptation of the border traffic agreement to the fourth railroad package, written confirmation from the Italian authorities is required for the approval of these two types of vehicle for the journey between Brig and Domodossola.
Fourth railroad package
As soon as this written confirmation is available, operations will resume. SBB hopes that this will be the case as soon as possible. According to SBB, it has been in contact with the Italian Ministry of Transport for more than six months in order to maintain operations.
With the fourth railroad package, the European Union is aiming to create a single European railroad area. The aim is to standardize the fragmented European rail network with its different safety standards and technical systems. The European Council wrote this on its website.
