Retour au fil d'actualité

The official Federal Council photo for 2024 shows the members of the national government in front of a mountain panorama. The new President of the Swiss Confederation, Viola Amherd, wants to convey the values of confidence, solidarity and foresight with the picture of the Federal Council in front of twelve mountains.

These values become more important in difficult times, the Federal Chancellery wrote in a press release on New Year's Eve. Confidence is needed that Switzerland can master the challenges of the times with its strengths. Solidarity is necessary in order to share responsibility and make courageous decisions.

Foresight is needed to take the right steps today so that the hurdles of the future can be overcome with momentum.

"The global events are unsettling many people in Switzerland. In times like these, decisive action is needed. The common thread for this should be our shared values," said Viola Amherd, President of the Swiss Confederation in 2024, according to the press release.

The photo symbolizes that the Federal Council also stands for these values and works together against the backdrop of these values.

Säntis, San Salvatore, Chasseral. . .

The photo was taken by Bernese photographer Sina Guntern. Mountains such as the Matterhorn, Monte San Salvatore in Ticino, the Chasseral in the Bernese Jura and the Säntis can be seen on a canvas in front of which the Federal Councillor is posing. Guntern created the mountain panorama himself using diffuser foil, cardboard, wood and fabric. The picture was taken at the Bundeshaus Ost.

The picture was printed in an edition of 40,000 copies. It can be downloaded and ordered on the Confederation's website. A short film shows how the Federal Council photo was taken.

Earlier photos were more cheerful

The Federal Council photo 2023 was also intended to convey a sense of security in uncertain times. It shows magistrates dressed in dark clothing and the Federal Chancellor with a rather serious expression together at a meeting table. In the middle is the outgoing President of the Swiss Confederation, Alain Berset.

In the Federal Council photos of previous years, the members of the national government and the Federal Chancellor always appeared more cheerful: in the photo from 2022, the majority of people are smiling on a railroad map of Switzerland. Each person is standing where they come from.

In 2019, President Ueli Maurer - surrounded by the other members of the government - was seen laughing as he photographed the audience with a cell phone. In 2018, Alain Berset, who was already President of the Swiss Confederation at the time, was responsible for a cartoon-style image that was also suitable for social media channels in an animated version.
