The Basel tenor Daniel Behle received the German Record Critics' Honorary Award at the New Year's Concert in Basel on Monday. He was honored as a "treasure digger who doesn't stop at the usual grateful hits", as the laudatory speech put it.

"Behle is the most enterprising and resourceful of his guild," said the laudatory speech. He is someone who believes in the medium of the record in a way that ranges from "optimistic to fantastic" and has a catalog that "quantitatively, but above all qualitatively" corresponds to the life's work of many of his colleagues.

In the 18 solo albums he has released to date, he reveals a broad spectrum of content, ranging from popular Schubert songs to Strauss songs and Wagner arias to Christmas songs he has composed himself, according to the laudation.

Born in Hamburg in 1974 and now a naturalized citizen of Basel, he is primarily present live as a sought-after and celebrated Mozart tenor at all the major opera houses: in the coming months, for example, as Belmonte in "Die Entführung aus dem Serail" at La Scala in Milan or as Ferranto in "Cosi fan tutte" at the Royal Opera House in London.

While Corona composes operetta

Behle's activities also include engagements at the Bayreuth Festival, the Vienna State Opera and his own operetta. The tenor took advantage of the forced break during the coronavirus lockdown to compose a singspiel entitled "Hopfen und Malz", which premiered at the Eduard-von-Winterstein-Theater in the German Erzgebirge in early 2023 with a libretto by Basel writer Alain-Claude Sulzer.

Excerpts from this operetta could now be heard at the New Year's Concert with the Basel Symphony Orchestra at the Theater Basel - alongside works by Camille Saint-Saëns, Johann Strauss, Georges Bizet and Leonhard Bernstein, among others.
