As part of a solidarity campaign for people living in poverty, Swiss citizens donated a total of 317 tons of food and hygiene products for distribution in Switzerland between Christmas and mid-January. The Swiss Red Cross (SRC) announced on Thursday that 50,960 parcels were prepared for people in need.

The support provided by the "2 x Christmas" campaign is urgently needed, the press release continues. The poverty rate in Switzerland has been rising since 2014. The fact that prices will continue to rise in 2023 will further exacerbate the situation for those affected.

From February 2024, the Red Cross cantonal associations will distribute the food and hygiene products to people living in poverty and social institutions throughout Switzerland

At the same time, 285,000 Swiss francs were raised via online donations for SRC winter aid projects in Eastern Europe and Central Asia, the SRC reports. Together with the Red Cross and Red Crescent societies on the ground, the SRC is using these funds to help people affected by poverty in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Armenia, Moldova and Kyrgyzstan.

The Red Cross supports people there who are particularly affected by the cold and living in precarious conditions, for example with soup kitchens, cash aid or food parcels. In total, the campaign will support over 50,000 people in Switzerland and abroad, the statement continued. The campaign, which is supported by Swiss Post, Coop, the SRG and the SRC, took place for the 27th time this year.
