Swiss Post delivered a total of 1.64 billion letters and transported 185 million parcels in 2023. The trend of declining letter volumes over the past few years continued, as Swiss Post announced on Tuesday.

In 2023, letter mail volumes fell by 5.6 percent compared to the previous year. According to Swiss Post, the volume of letters has fallen by around 40 percent over the past 20 years.

On the other hand, Swiss Post customers sent around 70 percent more parcels than ten years ago. Based on this long-term trend, Swiss Post continues to expect noticeable growth in the parcel market.

In 2023, Swiss Post employees processed 185 million parcels. This was 4.7 percent less than in the previous year. However, compared to 2019 - i.e. before the Covid-19 pandemic and the associated "parcel boom" - Swiss Post transported 24 percent more parcels. This corresponds to an increase of 35 million parcels.

The decline in parcel volumes over the whole of 2023 is a consequence of general inflation, the continuing gloomy consumer sentiment and the geopolitical situation, Swiss Post added. Despite this decline, parcel volumes would still remain at a high level.
