A 32-year-old man who fled from Ticino was arrested in the canton of Bern at the weekend. The Eritrean is accused of attempted murder and grievous bodily harm. The man, who lives in the Mendrisio area, was stopped in Brienz on Sunday while on the run.

The Ticino cantonal police became aware of the Eritrean after receiving an emergency call at 1.30 a.m. on Sunday morning, according to a press release issued on Tuesday.

Police and rescue workers found a 35-year-old Eritrean woman with a head injury in an apartment in Chiasso. She had to be taken to hospital. According to the police, her injuries are not life-threatening.

The Ticino public prosecutor's office was not yet able to provide any information about the nature of the head injuries. It is still unclear what object was used to inflict the wounds on the woman, the media spokesperson explained at the request of the Keystone-SDA news agency.

Thanks to the immediate investigation, the police were able to establish in the early hours of Sunday morning that the suspected perpetrator was traveling north by car. Based on an arrest warrant, the 32-year-old was arrested in Brienz at around 4.30 a.m. and transferred to the canton of Ticino.
