Retour au fil d'actualité

The workload and overtime of nursing staff in Swiss hospitals have increased over the past year. However, as the Hospital Nursing Report by researchers at the University of Bern shows, nurses feel less exhausted than during the coronavirus pandemic.

Satisfaction and the likelihood of wanting to continue working in the nursing profession also increased again slightly, as the University of Bern reported on Wednesday.

The hospital nursing report is based on a survey of 3,400 nurses from 22 Swiss hospitals. Compared to the time of the Covid-19 pandemic, nurses felt less emotional exhaustion (- 6.5 percent) and less time pressure (- 2.3 percent). Stress levels were also rated as slightly lower.

Dissatisfied with wages

According to the press release from the University of Bern, satisfaction among nurses is now almost back to the level it was at before the outbreak of the pandemic. The likelihood of continuing to work in the same profession in two years' time has also increased slightly. However, it is still around five percent lower than before the pandemic.

A good team culture, high decision-making authority, expanded training opportunities and extensive use of digital potential were cited as the main positive factors influencing job satisfaction. According to the university, however, satisfaction with pay remains low and, despite a slight increase compared to the last two years, is still 14% lower than before the pandemic.

Care initiative not yet implemented

In the survey conducted in summer and fall 2023, nurses rated their workload as even higher than in the previous year. According to the University of Bern, this was particularly due to staff changes, restructuring and the use of temporary staff instead of permanent positions.

The implementation of the nursing initiative was rated as low by the survey participants. 60 percent of nursing staff stated that their hospital was not yet actively working on implementing the nursing initiative.
