Austria supports Switzerland's efforts to hold a peace summit in Ukraine. Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen assured his Swiss counterpart Viola Amherd of this in a telephone conversation on Friday.
Van der Bellen provided information about the telephone conversation on the X platform (formerly Twitter). Amherd presented the peace summit plans in mid-January at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos GR.
Amherd had to cancel her inaugural visit to the Austrian capital Vienna planned for Friday due to the coronavirus. A new date will be arranged soon, it was reported. Traditionally, the new Swiss presidents make their first visit abroad to Austria. The Austrian-Swiss neighborhood is "a proven friendship", Van der Bellen announced on X, formerly Twitter.
In addition to the peace summit, the telephone conversation also covered the upcoming negotiations on relations between the EU and Switzerland, Van der Bellen announced. The neighborhood of the two countries "is based on close human, economic and political ties". Switzerland is also "an important partner" for Austria at European and global level, emphasized Van der Bellen.
