Retour au fil d'actualité

The Federal Council wants to support the European Women's Football Championship with four million francs. Parliament now has to decide. The European Championship will take place from July 2 to 27, 2025 in the cities of Basel, Bern, Geneva, Zurich, Lucerne, Sion, St. Gallen and Thun.

The European Women's Football Championship offers Switzerland the opportunity to give further impetus to girls' and women's sport, wrote the Federal Council on the proposal adopted on Wednesday. The aim is to increase the number of girls and young women active in sport and to increase the professionalization of women's football structures.

The federal contribution is therefore intended to support sports promotion measures of the Swiss Football Association (SFA) and other organizations that specifically promote girls' and women's sports.

The amount is to be compensated within the Department of Defense (DDPS) at the Federal Office of Sport (Baspo). Parliament now has to decide how the four million francs will be used.

The Women's European Football Championship is financed by the federal government and the host cities and cantons, as the Federal Council writes. Individual service providers also made contributions. The last major international football event in Switzerland was Euro 2008.

Football association not satisfied

The SFA is not entirely satisfied. However, the requested funds were only partially sufficient to achieve the goals of making the 2025 summer an event with international appeal and a lasting impact for Swiss girls' and women's football, it wrote.

According to the association, the planned integration of public transport and tourism would be of great importance for the tournament. This is likely to be difficult to achieve. The SFA is now hoping for further political discussions.
