The winter season is still going well for Swiss mountain railroads. Due to the better snow conditions compared to the previous year and good weather conditions at the weekends in some cases, the number of guests had risen significantly by January, the Swiss Cableways Association announced on Wednesday.

In the 2023/24 winter season, the number of first-time admissions to Swiss cable cars climbed by a fifth by January compared to the same period in the previous year, according to the report. The lifts recorded an increase of 14% in the month of January alone.

According to the association, small and medium-sized regions in particular also benefited from the better snow conditions compared to the previous year. In particular, the Arc Jurassien (+79%), Ticino (+67%), Eastern Switzerland (+61%) and the Vaud Alps (+43%) saw increases. However, increases of a good quarter were also recorded in the Bernese Oberland and Central Switzerland.

Last winter, which was very warm, skiing at lower altitudes was hardly possible or not possible at all. This put a heavy strain on the cable car business. However, the warm weather and therefore the sometimes precarious snow conditions are also currently causing problems for some destinations. "We are looking forward to a new batch of snow and the winter sports vacations, which have already started in some cantons," Berno Stoffel, Director of Seilbahnen Schweiz, is quoted as saying.
