Pilot dies in plane crash in Grenchen SO

The pilot of the small plane that crashed near Grenchen SO airport on Sunday afternoon is dead. The spokesman for the Solothurn cantonal police explained this on Sunday evening at the request of the Keystone-SDA news agency.
The other eleven occupants, all parachutists, were able to leave the plane and land safely on the ground. The accident occurred shortly after 2 p.m. on Sunday. Several patrols from the Solothurn cantonal police, the Grenchen fire department, the Federal Safety Investigation Office (Sust) and the Federal Criminal Police were among those deployed.
The small plane that crashed was a plane belonging to the Skydive Grenchen parachute club, principal Jürg Stoll told the Keystone-SDA news agency. The reasons for the incident are the subject of ongoing investigations by the police and the investigating authorities.
The cantonal police were unable to provide any further details on Sunday evening and referred to ongoing investigations by the Federal Security Investigation Office (Sust) and the Federal Criminal Police.
Pictures of the accident site show a completely destroyed wreckage of the plane on a meadow. An eyewitness told the news portal 20minuten that the small plane had crashed vertically to the ground.
Grenchen SO is home to an important regional airfield. According to the operator, Grenchen Airport has around 60,000 flight movements per year. The Skydive Grenchen parachute club, which is based at the airport, runs a skydiving school.
