The European Film Awards are being presented in Switzerland for the first time. But the awards ceremony on December 7 in Lucerne is just the glamorous finale to a whole series of events that will put the spotlight on Swiss and European filmmaking.
2024 is set to be a film year for Switzerland. The award ceremony for the best European films on December 7 at the Culture and Convention Center (KKL) in Lucerne is only the final event. In the months leading up to this, various events will focus on the "diverse relationships between Switzerland and the rest of Europe in the field of film", as announced by the Federal Office of Culture (FOC) on Monday.
Switzerland is the guest of honor at the Marché du film at the Cannes Film Festival (14.05.-22.05.). During this appearance as guest country, Switzerland presents itself as a co-production country for the international film industry. Film festivals in Switzerland focus on European filmmaking and Switzerland's links with Europe.
The Swiss film archive Cinémathèque suisse and Swiss television SRF will be showing a special program with award-winning films from the history of the European Film Awards. And in Lucerne, as in Central Switzerland, film screenings with filmmakers and film discussions are planned in the run-up to the awards ceremony.
This supporting program is intended to appeal to both the general and specialist public. According to the BAK, the program will be updated on an ongoing basis. A website will provide information.
The European Film Awards have been presented by the European Film Academy, based in Berlin, since 1988. The event takes place there every two years. In other years, it is the turn of other cities throughout Europe. Against this backdrop, the 37th European Film Awards will be presented in Switzerland.
Several awards have already gone to Switzerland in the past, such as Claude Barras for "Ma vie de courgette" in 2016 and the Swiss actor Bruno Ganz, who received the Lifetime Achievement Award for his life's work in 2010.
