Video artist Pipilotti Rist receives the Canton of Zurich Culture Prize 2024, which is endowed with CHF 50,000. This year's two sponsorship prizes of 30,000 francs each go to the band District Five and the writer Ivna Žic.

Pipilotti Rist is one of the most important Swiss artists of the present day and is regarded worldwide as a pioneering figure in contemporary video art, the Zurich cantonal government explained its choice in a statement on Thursday.

She has conquered the world of art with lush, colorful imagery and wildly proliferating installations and has been drawing crowds to exhibition halls for decades. She has revolutionized the language of video art worldwide. The artist has already received numerous awards and her work is represented internationally in important collections.

Sponsorship awards for District Five and Ivna Žic

District Five is an outstanding band on the Zurich music scene and an exceptional musical phenomenon, the press release continues. The four musicians from very different backgrounds form a highly original band. The award is intended to help their career take off internationally.

Ivna Žic is one of the most important younger voices in Swiss literature. The work of this Zurich author is characterized by its diversity, multi-perspectivity and linguistic precision, which should be honored and supported in a forward-looking way with the award, writes the cantonal government.

Golden badge of honor for Franz Hohler

Franz Hohler is awarded the Golden Badge of Honor for his life's work and his work as a "great integration and identification figure on the Swiss cultural scene". Matthias Grandjean, who has been a member of the Hora Theater ensemble since 2003, also receives a Golden Badge of Honor. The cantonal government honors him as a role model for many stage artists with trisomy 21.
