The Swiss also watch their wallets when driving. If fuel prices rise by 10 percent, the volume of traffic falls by 0.4 percent.

These are the findings of a study by the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (Seco). It examined the influence of fuel prices on the behavior of car drivers between 2010 and 2019.

In addition to the volume of traffic, higher prices at the pump also have an impact on car purchases. If petrol and diesel prices rise by 10%, new registrations of electric and hybrid vehicles in Switzerland increase by 0.7 percentage points. At the same time, registrations of combustion engines decrease by 0.4%.

However, higher prices have no influence on the speed driven. According to the Seco experts, driving behavior seems to depend on long-term behavioral patterns.
