The federal asylum center on Glaubenberg in the canton of Obwalden was completely evacuated on Monday evening following a bomb threat. The authorities assumed on Tuesday morning that there were no explosives in the facility.
According to a statement from the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM), the bomb threat was received in writing at the Federal Asylum Center on Monday evening. The alerted Obwalden cantonal police subsequently ordered the evacuation in consultation with the SEM.
The troop camp, which was temporarily used as asylum accommodation, was searched for several hours with the help of explosives detection dogs, the SEM announced. No explosives had been found by early Tuesday morning. It is assumed that the operation will be completed by midday.
Spent the night in other accommodation
Around 240 people live in the accommodation. Due to the bomb threat, they were taken by bus to two other temporary SEM asylum shelters in central Switzerland. The asylum seekers are expected to return to Glaubenberg in the course of the afternoon, the SEM announced.
The bomb alert triggered a large police operation. According to a press release, police officers from the canton of Obwalden were joined by specialists from Nidwalden, Lucerne, Zurich and Bern. The Sarnen fire department and the Obwalden rescue services were also deployed.
It was not known on Tuesday morning who had made the bomb threat. A report has been filed, according to the SEM.
