Minimum wages in the retail sector have risen again for 2024. Agreement was also reached in the CLA negotiations with the social partners. However, the Kaufmännische Verband criticizes the unsustainable wage policy of many companies.

Many negotiating partners would opt for shopping vouchers, one-off payments or individual wage adjustments instead of a sustainable inflation adjustment, the Swiss Commercial Association announced on Thursday. Employers continue to accept losses in real wages and thus a decline in employees' purchasing power.

The Kaufmännischer Verband has no understanding for this development in times of rising employee productivity and growing company profits. This is particularly unsatisfactory in air transport. The solidarity of employees towards companies is no longer taken into account in wage negotiations at the latest.

For the coming year, the Kaufmännische Verband is calling for a rethink at the top of companies. Long-term and sustainable solutions are needed in wage policy in order to raise wage levels, particularly in low-wage sectors, and prevent real wage losses.

At the beginning of August 2023, the Swiss Commercial Association demanded up to 4.5 percent more pay and more security for employees on low wages.
