Direct S-Bahn lines from Alsace to north-western Switzerland from 2030

Two new rail lines are to connect Alsace directly with north-western Switzerland from the 2030 timetable change. The suburban trains are planned between Mulhouse and Olten SO and Saint-Louis and Laufen BL, as announced by the Trireno association on Saturday.
The authorities responsible for ordering public transport in France and Switzerland have declared their intention to expand the S-Bahn service across borders, writes Trireno.
The S2 line will run from Mulhouse via Saint-Louis and Basel Bahnhof SBB to Olten, while the S4 line will run from Saint-Louis via Basel Bahnhof SBB to Laufen every 30 minutes. This would mean that the stops between Basel SBB and Saint-Louis would be served four times an hour.
Additional stops are to be built at Morgartenring and Dornach Apfelsee. SBB is preparing to purchase new trains for the cross-border S-Bahn lines, which will be co-financed by the French Région Grand Est.
In a next step, the Euroairport Base-Mulhouse is expected to be connected to the S-Bahn by 2035, as Trireno writes.
Relieving congested roads
"An expansion of the S-Bahn as the backbone of urban development is crucial in order to relieve the currently overcrowded roads. We benefit from this on both sides of the border", Trireno President Isaac Reber, member of the Basel-Landschaft cantonal government, is quoted as saying. Vice-President Esther Keller, member of the Basel-Stadt cantonal government, described the new service as a "step towards more climate-friendly mobility" that will bring the region even closer together.
Seven authorities form the Trireno association based in Liestal BL: the cantons of Basel-Stadt, Basel-Landschaft, Aargau, Solothurn and Jura, the French region of Grand Est and Baden-Württemberg on the German side.
