The Swiss hotel industry made a strong start to the new year. Thanks in particular to more foreign guests, occupancy rates at Swiss hotels were higher than in the same month last year.

The total number of overnight stays rose by 2.2% year-on-year to 3.1 million in January, as reported by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO) on Thursday. This was the highest number of overnight stays ever recorded in January.

More international guests

Guests from abroad were the main driving force behind the increase. They accounted for 1.4 million overnight stays in January, an increase of 4.0%. The most important group of guests came from Germany with almost 293,000 overnight stays, followed by the USA (155,000 overnight stays), the United Kingdom (131,000) and France (102,000).

In contrast, the number of Swiss guests was only slightly higher at +0.6%. With 1.7 million overnight stays, they still accounted for the majority of all guests in January.

Overall, the Swiss hotel industry has thus seamlessly followed on from last year’s record number of guests. With 41.8 million overnight stays, it recorded more than 40 million overnight stays in one year for the first time in 2023.
