The Association of Swiss Military Societies (VMG) called on the federal government on Friday to swiftly implement the mandatory orientation day for female citizens. It is more important than ever to involve women in the country's security policy.

This is in view of the deteriorating geopolitical and European security situation, as the VMG announced on the occasion of International Women's Day.

For most people, an orientation day is their first contact with the Swiss Armed Forces, civil defense and security policy in general. The purpose of the orientation day is to provide Swiss citizens with first-hand information about Switzerland's security policy and the armed forces and to show them how they can participate.

Women can take part in the orientation day on a voluntary basis. However, only very few women make use of this, the report continued. Individual projects have been launched in this area - for example, the canton of Aargau introduced a mandatory orientation day in 2023.

The Federal Council and Parliament must step up the pace of the project as a priority measure in favor of security and equality at federal level, the VMG added.
