One point of the negotiating mandate is the settlement of disputes between Switzerland and the EU. Switzerland wants "legal certainty instead of arbitrariness", said Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis to the media in Bern on Friday.

In the event of a dispute, a political solution should be sought first. An arbitration tribunal with equal representation would then decide, added Cassis. The interpretation and application of Swiss and EU law would remain the responsibility of the respective state and its courts.

Chief negotiator Patric Franzen should conduct the negotiations "in tandem" with the respective specialist negotiator. The cantons are also on board where they wish, said Cassis. The Federal Council did not wish to comment on the timetable. "Quality before speed" applies.
