The SP has reiterated its demands for wage protection and public services to be safeguarded in the negotiations with the EU. However, it was pleased to note that the Federal Council has approved the final negotiating mandate and that negotiations can now begin.

The new package must improve the lives of people on both sides of the border. However, this is not guaranteed with certainty with the current negotiating mandate, according to a statement from the SP on Friday.

For the SP to be able to support a new package, it must not be allowed to weaken wage protection, liberalize the electricity market with negative effects or jeopardize the good functioning of the Swiss railroad system.

The Foreign Affairs Committee of the National Council has recognized the shortcomings in the mandate and demanded important clarifications. The SP warns that European policy must not be misused for a neoliberal attack on public services and wage and working conditions. "If the Federal Council indulges in the illusion that European policy can be made with the neoliberal ideologues of economiesuisse and the employers' association, this is extremely dangerous", Co-President Cédric Wermuth is quoted as saying in the press release.
