Two Streetcar Accidents in Zurich Yesterday

A pedestrian’s life was lost, and a cyclist was critically injured in two separate streetcar accidents near Zurich’s main station.

A pedestrian was killed in a streetcar accident near Zurich main station on Friday evening. In addition, a cyclist was critically injured in a second streetcar accident, according to Zurich city police.

According to the police report, the fatal accident occurred when a pedestrian fell under a streetcar on line 7 from Central in the direction of Bahnhofplatz for as yet unexplained reasons. The streetcar had to be lifted to rescue the victim.

However, the injuries were so severe that he died at the scene of the accident, the report continued. The identity of the deceased is the subject of ongoing investigations.

Traffic was closed over a wide area as a result of the accident. The bridge between Central and the main station was closed to traffic, including pedestrians, as reported by a Keystone-SDA reporter.

Second Accident

Around three quarters of an hour earlier, a Flexity streetcar on line 4 collided with a 27-year-old cyclist in Zurich’s Kreis 5 district. The cyclist was thrown to the ground and seriously injured, according to the city police.

It was the second fatal streetcar accident in Zurich this week: a female pedestrian was seriously injured in a streetcar accident in Zurich’s district 11 on Monday evening. The 56-year-old was taken to hospital in a critical condition. She died there early on Tuesday morning.
